Why Rewards Work
Behavioral research shows children using consistent reward systems train an average of 3 weeks faster. The key: immediate, reliable rewards — not delayed ones.
Sticker Charts
- Give the sticker immediately after success — not later
- Let the child place it themselves
- Define a milestone prize (10 stickers = treasure box pick)
- Hang the chart at child's eye level in the bathroom
Treasure Box
A small box of inexpensive mystery prizes (dollar store toys, mini play-doh, character stickers). Children work hard for unknown prizes — the mystery element is surprisingly motivating.
Special Privileges
- Extra book at bedtime
- 15 extra minutes of screen time
- Choosing dinner or dessert
- Special one-on-one activity with a parent
Edible Treats (First 2 Weeks Only)
A single M&M or jelly bean immediately after success is extremely effective for many toddlers. Keep portions tiny; use for only the first 1–2 weeks of training, then transition to sticker-only rewards.
Phasing Out Rewards
- Weeks 1–2: Reward every success
- Week 3: Reward only first success each day
- Week 4+: Praise only — no prizes needed
