Why Readiness Signs Are Non-Negotiable
Starting before physical readiness is the single biggest cause of prolonged, difficult potty training. Without voluntary bladder and bowel control, no amount of training will produce results.
Physical Readiness Signs
- Stays dry for at least 2 consecutive hours
- Has regular, somewhat predictable bowel movements
- Shows awareness of the urge — squats, grabs diaper, or tells you afterward
- Can walk to the bathroom independently
- Can pull pants up and down, or is actively learning to
Cognitive and Behavioral Signs
- Follows simple 2-step instructions
- Can communicate the need to go (words or meaningful gestures)
- Understands bathroom vocabulary: pee, poop, potty, wet, dry
- Shows curiosity about the bathroom or what adults do there
- Wants to wear "big kid" underwear
Emotional Readiness Signs
- Shows independence in other areas of daily life
- Can sit still for 2–3 minutes without significant distress
- Not in the middle of a major life transition
Signs It's Too Early
- Diaper always soaked when you check — no dry periods
- Complete disinterest or active refusal of any potty discussion
- Just experienced a significant life change
When you're seeing 5+ of these signs consistently, you're in the ready window. Start with confidence.
